A cow in Spain has cut off internet connection to 3,000 people after getting its horns entangled in vital fibre optic cables.
Video footage shared online shows the white animal unable to move after getting itself stuck on low-hanging cables in the middle of a field in Alto de Ubal, Bilbao.
The incident has left the entire town of Lanestosa and some residents in neighbouring Carranza without internet connection since Tuesday.
The mayor of Karrantza, Raul Palacio, said: ‘This is a direct consequence of the company’s complete lack of maintenance.
‘Everything is abandoned: fallen poles, dangling cables… You find situations like this in every neighbourhood of the municipality.’
Speaking to Radio Bilbao, Palacio insisted it was not an isolated case.
He explained: ‘It’s not the first time. We’ve had animals get tangled up, tractors run over downed cables… and often the fibre optic cable falls down and we’re left without connection…
‘We’ve been dealing with this situation for years. There are cables touching the roof tiles of houses because the poles are leaning or lying on the ground.
‘When they don’t break, the service continues, but the danger remains. If it breaks, like now, we’re left without fibre optic cable for several days..
‘It’s been like this for five or six days and they still haven’t fixed it. They tell us they’ll fix it urgently, but we’re still waiting. It’s chaotic.’
Farmer Ander Mato, who owns the cow, said it spent several hours distressed but is now okay. He said a further two have since become entangled, leaving one injured.
