RAILWAY workers will go on strike in Spain on Tuesday, it has been announced.
The 24-hour walkout is being organised by members of the CGT, SF-I and Alferro trade unions on behalf of Renfe and Adif employees.
In Andalucia, demonstrations will also take place at 11am at Malaga’s Maria Zambrano train station and Sevilla’s Santa Justa.
A demonstration will also take place in front of the Ministry of Transport in Madrid on April 3.
Workers at the publicly-owned Renfe and Afid are protesting what they consider to be breaches of contract by the Ministry of Transport.
They are angry over the transfer of the Rodalies service and the management of Renfe Mercanicas (freight trains) to the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government).
They fear the move will open the door to the privatisation of these operations in Cataluña.
Negotiations and proposals between Renfe and the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility have so far proved fruitless.
The strike on Tuesday will heavily impact services, with only 72% of high-speed, long distance (larga distancia) services operating.
Meanwhile, just 65% of medium distance (media distancia) services will be running.
Freight services will be worst hit, running just 25% of the usual number of trains.
All travellers are urged to check the status of their journey on Tuesday.
