With warm temperatures all-year round, drivers in Spain like to opt for lighter clothing, and that also goes for their feet.
But many people do not realise that driving in certain footwear could be deemed illegal by police and land you a hefty fine.
In a bid to make things clearer, the Civil Guard has released a TikTok video explaining whether or not people can legally get behind the wheel in sliders or flip flops.
Speaking to camera, an officer from the force’s ‘Trafico’ arm says: “Yes you can, unless the use of this footwear interferes with driving and may cause an accident.”
It means, essentially, that each officer will apply their own criteria when deciding whether or not to fine a driver – meaning for peace of mind you should probably opt for proper shoes.
According to Spain’s motoring laws, there is no rule that dictates what drivers can or cannot wear on their feet.
However, the regulations do establish that the driver must have ‘freedom of movement, the necessary field of vision and constant attention to driving to guarantee their own safety’. ,
Therefore, if the driver considers that flip-flops may affect their movements when controlling the pedals, it would be appropriate to choose footwear other than flip flops.
Additionally, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) advises that footwear should be flexible and comfortable in order to drive safely.
Therefore, the national traffic authority advises not to drive in flip-flops or heels, and to avoid having wet soles to avoid slipping.
