This is the moment Spanish police discovered drugs hidden inside wheelchairs belonging to disabled people.
The Policia Nacional said two people were arrested at Barcelona airport this week for trying to smuggle 11kg of cocaine into Spain.
According to the force, the drugs were hidden inside the batteries of two motorised wheelchairs.
The force said the arrests took place at Barcelona El Prat airport on two different days, with the suspects arriving from Brazil and Colombia.
The first passenger was traveling alone with a physical disability and was asked about the purpose of his trip.
Police said he responded nervously and hesitantly, raising suspcions.
Authorities had been on guard after learning that cartels were using people with disabilities to traffic drugs abroad.
The passenger’s luggage was subjected to a thorough search, before officers moved on to his wheelchair, discovering the battery had been tampered with.
Inside they found 10 packets containing 7.5kg of cocaine, leading to the passenger’s arrest.
A day later, a disabled traveller arrived from Bogota (Colombia), also in a wheelchair, which police did not hesitate to search, finding 3.8kg of cocaine hidden in the battery.
Both men were between 24 and 26 years old and were ‘particularly vulnerable, with a severe physical disability’, police said.
