The body of a missing hiker has been found just 200m from a mountain shelter in Spain following an overnight search.
The 28-year-old from Alicante had travelled to the mountainous region of Asturias to enjoy a few days of hiking in the snow-capped Las Ubiñas Natural Park.
However, he disappeared after his last contact with friends at around 1pm on Tuesday, but was not reported missing until nightfall.
An extensive search was launched by the Guardia Civil and the SEPA mountain rescue force, which included the use of sniffer dogs and and drones.
In a race against the clock, they spent the night tracking his route between between Lindes (Quiros) and the Lenense mountain shelter.
The search continued until Wednesday morning, when a helicopter was able to join the task force.
Rescuers then discovered the mountaineer’s sleeping bag before spotting his lifeless body around 200m below the Meicin shelter.
The Guardia Civil said: ‘The lifeless body of a mountaineer was found in Pola de Lena. The young man, aged 28 and from Alicante , was found this morning 200m from the Meicin shelter after disappearing during a route between Lindes and Tuiza.
‘Our deepest condolences to the family and friends.’
