A Semana Santa spectator has been arrested in Malaga after being seen splashing a figure of Christ with water.
The unnamed man was seen being dragged away by local police on Monday after causing a commotion in the heart of the tourist mecca.
The drama unfolded during a traditional Holy Week procession by the Brotherhood of the Crucifixion on Calle Peña.
The centuries-old tradition sees the brotherhood, or religious fraternity, carry a large figure of Jesus Christ on a float, which rests on their shoulders.
They had only been on the street for a few minutes when the spectator in question splashed a bottle of water onto the figure of Jesus on a cross.
Several of the bearers were also splashed by the water, although luckily none of them slipped.
The moment sparked a vocal backlash from the crowd and caught the attention of the local police.
In footage shared on X, two officers can be seen meandering through the spectators to apprehend the suspect.
One witness told El Español: ‘He arrived and before we knew it, he was throwing water at him.’
The man, who is reported to be Spanish, faces charges for disturbing the peace.
Semana Santa is one of the most important holidays on the Spanish calendar, particularly in the southern region of Andalucia, which includes Malaga.
For centuries, it has entailed a week of processions marked by their pageantry.
Elaborate and colourful religious statues are placed on floats, which are carried through city centres and towns on the backs of local worshippers.
