The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Brits heading to Spain following extreme bouts of flooding.
Over the weekend, parts of Lanzarote were filmed totally submerged by flash floods after days of rain sparked by Storm Olivier.
One Brit on the island said he was ‘surprised no one was killed’, comparing the scenes to ‘armageddon’.
Scores of homes and businesses have been flooded in parts of the island. The most affected areas were Arrecife, Teguise and San Bartolome.
In an update to its Spain travel advice, the UK Foreign Office said: ‘Heavy rainfall and flooding in Lanzarote occurred over the weekend. Journeys may be affected.
‘If you are in Lanzarote or travelling to Lanzarote, follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local weather updates.’
Footage from the weekend showed how cars, properties and streets were left unreachable by the tides of brown water.
Among the affected businesses were hotels, with several losing power for some hours.
Some people were seen wading through the muddy water, while locals took shelter on balconies.
Anyone travelling to Lanzarote is urged to check the status of their booking with their hotel or tour company.
