Two runners are in a serious condition after collapsing during the Madrid Half Marathon on Sunday.
Both participants, aged 20 and 35, suffered cardiac arrests and required emergency medical attention.
According to regional newspaper 20Minutos, one of the runners collapsed near the iconic Cibeles Palace, and was attended to by a nurse on a bike who performed CPR before paramedics arrived.
He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. His current condition is unknown but health workers were still trying to revive him en route to hospital.
The second case saw a runner fall on Paseo de Recoletos. A doctor from the crowd jumped into action and performed CPR with two security officers until a medical team arrived. His pulse was restored but he was ferried to hospital in a serious condition.
A total of 50 participants had to be treated for a range of issues, including heat exhaustion and sprains.
Two races were held on Sunday; the 27,000-strong Madrid Half Marathon and the ProFuturo half marathon, which saw 3,000 people take part.
