THE provinces in Spain with the best and worst quality water have been ranked by health experts.
In a new report, the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) analysed tap water across the country to determine its quality and safety for consumption.
The watchdog then ranked each province studied on flavour, clarity, hardness and the presence of contaminants.
After collecting all the data, the OCU found that the best tap water can be found in Madrid, Vizcaya and Pontevedra.
These top three areas have soft water running through its taps, making the flavour more pleasant and resulting in less residue – such as limescale – in pipes and appliances.
Meanwhile, the provinces with the worst tap water were Tarragona, Mallorca, Murcia, Albacete and Jaen.
People living in these areas are advised by the OCU to consume bottled water or make sure their tap water is filtered.
According to the OCU, in areas where the water quality is high, tap water is as good or even better than bottled water.
It’s much better for the environment, is cheaper, and carries less risk of microplastics.
Homes in areas with hard water or low quality water should install filters and regularly check the quality of water.
