A leading Spanish travel magazine has made a map of the best restaurant in every province in Spain.
After consulting with its readers and its own food experts, Revista Viajar decided on the best eatery in all 50 provinces.
The publisher admitted that there may be disagreement about some of its options, but welcomed the debate.
Below are just four of its winners, you can see the full list here.
Malaga
The best restaurant in Malaga province is La Taberna de Monroy, says Viajar.
Situated in the historic centre of Malaga city, this ‘hidden’ wine bar ‘is packed with Andalusian style and soul.’
The ranking describes it as ‘a place with a good atmosphere where you can enjoy classic tapas and pinchos with a Cordoban edge.’
Its top dishes are reportedly salmorejo cordobes, artichokes, oxtail and acorn-fed Iberian jamon.
All of its dishes are perfectly paired with wines from the local region, says Viajar.
Alicante
The best restaurant in Alicante province is Quique Costa, says Viajar.
This famous eatery is not so hidden, given its three Michelin stars and eponymous head chef.
Viajar praises Dacosta for taking diners on a ‘culinary journey through tasting menus’ that explore ‘the richness of the Mediterranean.’
It described the dishes as ‘works of art’ with ‘exquisite presentations and deep flavours that highlight premium local ingredients such as fresh seafood, native herbs and seasonal produce.’
Balearic Islands
Viajar selected Voro as the best place to eat on the Balearic Islands, made up of Majorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera.
Led by two-Michelin-starred chef Alvaro Salazar, Voro, based on Majorca, ‘presents signature cuisine that fuses Mediterranean tradition with modern, creative techniques.’
Its tasting menus change with the seasons and ‘include exquisitely crafted dishes such as red prawn ceviche, Majorcan lamb and local vegetables’, writes Viajar.
It said dining at Voro ‘is a unique sensory experience, ideal for lovers of haute cuisine looking to discover surprising and delicate flavours in a setting that reflects the beauty and luxury of the Balearics.’
Madrid
DiverXO by Dabiz Muñoz is the best restaurant in Madrid, according to Viajar.
But it’s also been voted the best restaurant in the world, partly thanks to the theatre-like experience.
For head chef Muñoz, ‘the dishes are canvases and the food is art’, says Viajar, so ‘he is aware that he needs a very select team and prices that, although they may seem exorbitant, must cover all the needs of the restaurant.’
You will not eat here for less than €300 per person.
